Carmaggedon

Postby chris121212 » Sat May 09, 2009 2:55 pm

I saw Carmaggedon on CGN, but I can't play M games usually if they are extremely gorey. I looked at the screenshots and did not see any blood. Can somebody tell me what is so "disturbing" about the game?

Hmm, the most disturbing aspect of the game would be that it actively encourages you to hit as many innocent pedestrians as possible. Some cars are specifically adapted to that purpose (spikes, knives, ...), and I seem to recall the existence of a game mode where you have to kill every person in the city to win.

I wouldn't say the game is very gory. Pedestrians are just basic low-resolution 2D sprites, with barely any special effects. Its sequel, Carmageddon 2, is a lot worse though, so you might want to avoid that one :)

Also, remember that these ratings can sometimes be surprisingly unrealistic (either exaggerated, or not strict enough).

So what would you rate it then? Teen?

Hmm, something in between Teen and Mature, I guess...
The European (PEGI) 16+ rating would be just right in my opinion.

By the way, Mobygames has clearer screenshots than we do: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/carma ... creenshots

Also note that the M from the past is not the same as the M from the present, mainly because of the improved game graphics (thus you cannot really compare them). A game like Unreal Tournament 3 for example is a lot gorier than Carmageddon 1. :)

I am thinking about getting the second one since I play UT now. Which is more gorier, UT3 or C2?

UT3 since it's more realistic. You can blow up people with a rocket launcher and see their head come off if you headshot them. :)

Try both, Carmageddon 2 is an awesome game as well.

Okay, awesome. I'll just use this info to convince my mom into letting me play it. Then while I am waiting for the second one, I'll play the first one. Thank you all for your help!

Um... that has happened in all the UT games
UT3 sure is more realistic, but those arguments don't illustrate the fact though, I'd mention the Unreal 3 engine which allows more vivid visual experience and thus more realistic gore effects.

Still the glory of a headshot needs to be mentioned!

True, and UT3 (not sure if that mutator was also found in 2k4) features it also in slow-motion so you can take your time admiring all the gore :smirk:
